This classification of the mosses is based on Goffinet, B., W.R Buck and A.J. Shaw (2008), Morphology and classification of the Bryophyta, in Goffinet & Shaw (eds.) Bryophyte Biology 2nd edition, p. 55-138, Cambridge University Press. The site is maintained by B. Goffinet , W. R. Buck, and A. J. Shaw. The current version differs slightly from the one proposed by Goffinet et al. (2008), primarily in the rank used to distinguish the main lineages: we have adopted the ranking proposed by Stech & Frey (2008: Nova Hedwigia 86: 1-21) and adapted our classification accordingly (see Goffinet et al. 2010).
We have corrected some of the authorities listed by us for supraordinal taxa, and followed Stech and Frey (2008) who correctly identified the earliest combinations.Since we first posted the classification we have made several corrections, based on comments kindly submitted by Drs.
