Collections Facility (work study and independent study)
- The Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology a natural
history collection comprising approximately 800,000 specimens
of plants, fish, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, insects,
and other arthropods and parasites.
This is the third largest natural history collection in
New England. The collections are used extensively in research
and teaching, and serves as a repository for the State of
Connecticut. The collections require the continuous attention
of collection managers. The size of the collection is growing
annually through contributions of specimens collected by
faculty or through donations. New specimens must be carefully
prepared, accessioned and properly stored. The facility
needs volunteers to participate in these efforts. Specifically
we offer training to work-study or independent study students
in the preparation, maintenance and databasing of botanical
and zoological research specimens . We are looking for a
few motivated students interested in natural history. If
you are interested, contact Bob Capers (robert.capers@uconn.edu)
or Jane O’Donnell (jane.odonnell@uconn.edu)
.
