10/9/09 - SUMMER
RESEARCH EXPERIENCE IN SOUTH AFRICA
We are seeking three qualified undergraduates to participate
in a field-based research expedition to study biodiversity,
ecology, and evolution in selected *plant* groups in South
Africa. The field portion will extend over about 5 weeks from
~July 20-August 24, will involve research at 4-5 different
field sites where students will conduct independent projects
and will participate in group projects. Students will also
be expected to enroll in a weekly seminar (1 credit) during
Spring semester of 2010, covering both cultural and scientific
background to be held on the UConn Storrs campus. Travel,
lodging and field expenses along with a /stipend/ will be
paid for by a grant from the National Science Foundation for
International Research Experiences for Students.
This will be the third such trip we have made to South Africa
and a number of UConn undergrads and grads have participated
in the past.
Interested students should submit /transcripts, resume/ (with
contact information), /one //letter of recommendation/ (in
a sealed, signed envelope), and /a cover letter/ that describes
previous research experience, previous international experience
(if any), a list of relevant courses, and a brief statement
/explaining why you are interested in this experience/.
Please submit application materials
by *November 2* to *Carl Schlichting*, U 3043, Department
of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology,
University of Connecticut.
Students interested in participating in the course are encouraged
to contact Carl Schlichting for more information before application
materials are due.

Sloan-Kettering Summer Undergraduate Research Program
- The Gerstner Sloan-Kettering Graduate School of Biomedical
Sciences sponsors a 10-week research program for outsanding
undergraduate students who are interested in pursuing a career
in biomedically-related sciences. Students will learn from
scientists who are conducting research in developmental biology
and genetics, cell-cell interactions and protein targeting,
tumor immunology, human cancer genetics, drug development
and clinical therapeutics, and computational biology. Housing
and stipend are provided. Application
deadline: February 1, 2010. For more information visit:

10/6/09 - University
of Notre Dame Environmental Research Center Summer 2010 Opportunities
Applications are due November 6, 2009.
The 2010 UNDERC-East program runs from May 17 to July 23.
The University of Notre Dame Department of Biological Sciences
offers a 9 and 1/2 week summer field-oriented environmental
biology program to undergraduate students enrolled at Notre
Dame, St. Mary's College, and other colleges around the country.
The program provides training in aquatic, terrestrial, and
environmental biology through lecture and field experience
with a variety of aquatic and terrestrial organisms and natural
habitats. It also includes an independent research project
developed by each student under the direction and with the
assistance of a department of Biological Sciences faculty
member, graduate student or visiting faculty member. At the
end of the summer, each student prepares an oral presentation
and a research paper presenting the results of the summer's
field research.
Acceptance in the program includes tuition for 6 credits,
housing, round trip transportation between Notre Dame and
the UNDERC site and a $2500 summer stipend.
10/6/09 - UT
Southwestern Medical Center Summer Undergraduate Research
Fellowships

UT Southwestern offers two summer research opportunities
to undergraduates. The SURF
program includes all of the basic biomedical life sciences,
while the
QP-SURF program includes the Quantitative and Physical
Sciences, such as biophysics, computational and systems biology,
and synthetic organic chemistry. Fellows will pursue individual
research projects under the direction of a member of the graduate
school faculty, attend lectures and seminars by faculty members,
and enjoy a variety of social activities in the Dallas metropolitan
area. Applicants must be enrolled in a natural science degree
program at the undergraduate level and have completed the
sophomore year.
